Sprinkler Systems

The Importance of Winterization

With the recent release of the Farmer’s Almanac winter prediction, Nebraska and the North Central region are predicted to be a “hibernation zone, glacial, and snow-filled” this coming winter. Frigid temperatures are coming and it’s best to prepare as soon as possible. As the temperature drops, many tend to forget about their sprinkler system as less watering is needed. However, your sprinkler system should be at the forefront of your mind as the temperatures drop. Proper preparation and winterization are needed to ensure quality performance in the next spring and summer seasons

The Importance of Winterizing Your Sprinkler System

Avoids risk of flooding

Have you ever put a soda can or water bottle in the freezer to cool it down and then forgotten about it? When you opened the freezer, you probably saw a busted can of soda or a deformed water bottle after it froze over. The same can go for your sprinkler system. If any water is left within your sprinkler system, it will begin to freeze in the winter months and eventually expand, causing the pipes to burst. Once the warmer temperatures return, the water will melt and flood out now that the pipes have busted open. This flooding can lead to water seeping into your home’s foundation and puddling around your landscaping. To avoid the risk of flooding, your sprinkler system will need to be properly shut off, drained, and blown out.

Saves you money

The effort you put in now can ultimately save you tons of money in repairs and replacements within both your sprinkler system and your home. In addition to busted pipes, pressure built up from freezing pipes can cause the sprinkler heads to pop off, resulting in the need for replacements. Any leftover water can cause rusting as well, reducing the lifespan of your sprinkler system. Lastly, the warranty on your sprinkler system could be voided if you do not winterize your sprinkler system.

Properly winterizing your sprinkler system may seem like a lengthy process, but will save you money in the long run.
