Sprinkler & Irrigation Services

As cooler temperatures roll in, lawn maintenance (aside from raking leaves) tends to become out of sight, out of mind for many homeowners. However, prepping your lawn during the colder months is essential to growing a luscious, green lawn in the coming year — the most important steps being aeration and overseeding.

Over the spring and summer months, your lawn has taken quite a beating from the heat, drought, kids and pets playing in the yard, and possible over- or under-watering. Oftentimes, this leads to compacted soil and damaged roots. Breathe life back into your lawn with aeration.

Aeration

Aeration involves puncturing small holes into your lawn to decompact the soil. This allows for air, water, and necessary nutrients to reach the roots easier and quicker. Doing so will grow healthier roots and strengthen your lawn to fight against weeds, insects, and disease.

Overseeding

To further seal the deal, finish off the aeration with overseeding. Overseeding is spreading new grass seed over the existing grass. The overseed will further reach the soil thanks to the aerated holes — the perfect supplement for a healthy lawn.

It is best to aerate and overseed between August and September to ensure that the seeds hold before the first freeze.

Last but not least, make sure to winterize your sprinkler system to prevent damage to your home, lawn, and overall sprinkler system. Read more about winterization in our next blog — The Importance of Winterization
